“Tassie’s town of murals now has a new honour to brag about – Australia’s tidiest town

SHEFFIELD is known as Tasmania’s gorgeous little town of murals,

but now it has another title to brag about, “Tidiest Town.”

Last night at a ceremony in Victor Harbour, Victoria, Sheffield was crowned top dog – the tidiest town in Australia – and the locals are pretty chuffed.

Mark Beach-Ross, the president of Sheffield Inc which organises the town’s annual Mural Fest, said he was thrilled that Sheffield’s bold community spirit had been recognised and the win would further bolster that spirit.

It is the first time since 2007, when Swansea won the national award, that a Tasmanian town has taken home the major gong.

Kentish Mayor Don Thwaites was in Victor Harbor last night to accept the award.

Tasmanian Tidy Towns judge Barry Muir said a town needed to do a lot more to become a finalist than just look good, be litter free and boast nice parks and gardens.

“There also needs to be a feeling good and doing good presence, with sustainability being the bottom line,” Mr Muir said.

“And that is what helped Sheffield win.”

Mr Muir said he had been to almost every corner of Tasmania during his years as a judge.

He said he had found that towns which were “off the beaten track” needed to be imaginative and creative to not only survive but also to encourage people to visit.

“Sheffield, with the added attraction of magnificent Mt Roland in the background, is an outstanding example of such a town,’” Mr Muir said.

The town also won the Resource Recovery and Waste Management Award and was highly commended for environmental innovation and protection and energy innovation.

Keep Australia Beautiful national chief executive Peter McLean said that for a small town, Sheffield was well ahead of the competition on resource recovery.
